The world’s Most Expensive Coffee? Coffee is considered to be the most soothing type of beverage. It is very popular with people of all ages, especially to those who require an energy boost. In this blog, we are going to discuss a very premium coffee, Kopi Luwak or Civet Cat Coffee.

So what exactly is the Kopi Luwak?

Kopi Luwak is the world’s most expensive coffee; its cost ranges from $35- $100 per cup in a regular coffee shop or $100 – $600 per pound. The primary factor of its high price is the unique method of producing such a coffee. It is produced from the coffee beans which have been digested by a particular Indonesian cat-like animal called the Palm Civet or Civet Cat. This the reason Kopi Luwak is also called cat poop coffee or Civet Cat coffee. The faeces of this cat will be collected, beans taken out and then cleaned, finished and sold as Kopi Luwak.

Is there more to its uniqueness?

Producers of the coffee beans argue that the process improves coffee through two mechanisms – Selection and Digestion. Selection occurs if the civets choose to eat coffee berries containing better beans. Digestive Mechanisms may enhance the flavour profile of the coffee beans. The civet eats the berries for the beans’ fleshy pulp, then in the digestive tract, fermentation occurs. The civet’s protease enzymes seep into the beans, making shorter peptides and more amino acids. They pass through the civet’s intestines until the beans are defecated with other faecal matter, that is collected and thence the journey begins.

The first thing you notice about Kopi Luwak coffee beans is that they feel different – lighter and somehow more brittle. And when you open the bag you get a slight aroma of chocolate, which gives you a hint of what’s to come.

Well, it is a very different coffee, and it tastes marvellous. It’s a smooth brew, with an even taste profile and no sharp edges.

That familiar coffee bitterness is wrapped up in a mild chocolate flavour. If most mild coffees have the taste profile of milk chocolate, Kopi Luwak tastes like a high-quality dark chocolate, sweet with a hint of bitterness at the same time.

It goes down very smoothly, and every sip is a delight. It is smooth, mild and sweet, with a gentle hint of bitterness. A fascinating thing about this coffee is that it does not have any aftertaste!

Kingsmen Tip: ‘Never add sugar or cream to Kopi Luwak. It will ultimately ruin it by turning it into just another mild Coffee.

    I got a chance to see this in Bali, Indonesia. I visited the coffee plantations and this coffee was awesome.
